Drawing Room Online Fair: Solo by Valentin van der Meulen
On the Occasion of Drawing Room, the UN-SPACED Gallery is delighted to offer a solo show by the french born artist Valentin van der Meulen.
Born in Lille in 1979, Valentin van der Meulen lives and works in Paris.
Valentin van der Meulen questions the limits of image and drawing. An excellent technician, he is constantly seeking to find the tipping point between figuration and abstraction, the moment when the drawing ceases to be intelligible, abandoning its representational function to become a conceptual composition. By hiding parts of the visual information, the original drawing becomes the framework, the sample of a new composition.
Van der Meulen's work is divided into series, often defined by a type of alteration. Gummed up, cut out, masked with coloured paper.
Valentin van der Meulen has been represented for several years by galleries in Zurich, Brussels, Hamburg and Paris. His work can be seen in institutional exhibitions such as “Bribes” at the Maison des Arts de Malakoff, “Untitled” at the Chateau de Bussy Rabutin in collaboration with the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, and most recently “Free” at the Drawing Lab in Paris in 2018. It has been exhibited at fairs such as Drawing Now, Kunst Zurich, Art Fair Cologne or Art Paris. Present in several private collections in France and abroad such as the Fondation Francés, his work questions the field of the image through the notions of alteration, space, time, history, or the construction of identity.
